The Government of Yukon (“We”) is committed to protecting privacy of individuals. We collect, use, disclose, retain and dispose of information through Government of Yukon properties such as our websites and mobile applications in compliance with Yukon’s Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act and Archives Act.

The purpose of this Privacy Policy (“Policy”) and collection notice is to inform the user (“you”) of the personal information that we may collect, use, disclose, retain, and dispose of from you when you interact with our 511 website, mobile application, and Interactive Voice Response system (collectively “Platforms”).

This Policy does not apply to anyone who isn't under our control or management, such as the operators of other websites, services, or applications that you might link to or from these Platforms. Please note that this Policy only applies to these Platforms and does not apply to Government of Yukon’s other programs and functionalities and their websites or applications.

IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO THESE TERMS OF THIS POLICY, PLEASE STOP USING THESE PLATFORMS IMMEDIATELY.

From time to time, we may amend this Policy by making changes to this page. You are deemed to accept such amendments by continuing using these Platforms after we have posted the updated policy on this page.

Personal Information Collection Notice

Under the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, personal information means recorded information of an identifiable individual.

We (and our service provider) collect personal information through these Platforms under the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, RSY 2002, c. 108, Section 15(c)(i), and the Highways Act, RSY 2002, c. 108, Section 4, for purposes of delivering highway and traffic information and other 511 related services to you on our Platforms (“Services”) and evaluation of 511 program in the Department of Highways and Public Works.

Delivery of 511 related services includes disclosure of personal information to third party service providers for the purpose of processing your voice commands, route calculations, and geolocation identification. The evaluation of 511 program may include the use of web and audio analytics to improve Yukon’s 511 services.

If you would like to contact us for further information, you may refer to the Privacy Contact section below. Please note that you are under no obligation to provide any personal information to us at any time. There is no charge for you to register or to use our Platforms.

Information We Collect from You

Interactive Voice Response System

If you choose to call our 511 contact number, which is powered by our Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system, we will collect and record your voice data during your interaction with the IVR. We will also collect your phone number that will be associated with your voice data.

Website and Mobile App

If you interact or browse through our 511 website or mobile application, we will collect the following:

User profile

We may collect the following personal information from you when you register an account with us:

  • Password (mandatory)
  • Email address (mandatory)
  • Mobile phone number (optional)

You can choose not to provide certain information, but then you might not be able to take advantage of many features in our Platforms. You will be asked to create a password which you will need to access your account profile online or through the mobile application. Your account is universal across our website and mobile application.

Using our Services

Our mobile application or website features, including providing customized routes, browsing our map, saving your favorite camera locations, may require you voluntarily to provide us with additional information. The information we collect includes:

  • Travel routes, starting location and ending location (optional)
  • Information you saved while interacting with our Platforms – favourite camera locations, saved routes, favourite map layers, etc. (optional)
  • Location information, including network based location and GPS location (optional)

You can choose not to provide certain information, but some Service functionalities may not be working properly without such information.

Automatic Information

When you browse through our 511 website or mobile application, these platforms automatically collect limited amounts of information for web traffic monitoring and statistical purposes. The information is analyzed for operational trends, performance, and for ways to improve our Services. Information that may be collected from a registered and non-registered user includes:

  • Internet Protocol (IP) addresses of the devices being used to access the Application
  • Operating systems and the types and versions of browsers used to access the Application
  • Device ID, manufacturer information and other device-related data
  • Internet Service Providers information
  • Dates and times of Application access
  • Product interactions such as pages visited and names and sizes of files requested
  • Website or URL you arrived from
  • Diagnostic data such as crash data and performance data of the mobile application

As a general practice, we make no attempt to link this information with the identity of individuals using our Platforms. If you choose to register for or contact these Platforms, we will keep track only of the information and preferences that you choose to provide to us. Our service provider will store it securely on their system and will not release it to any third party without your prior consent unless required by law.

Use of Personal Information

In general, any personal information you give us will only be used for the purpose of administering our Services and evaluating the 511 program. You will not be placed on any mailing lists. We (and our service provider) may use the personal information we collect to:

  • process your voice commands to help you select the correct the menu options while you are contacting us;
  • analyze your voice data (via our service providers) to improve language processing and perform quality assurance and quality control of our IVR system;
Mobile Application and Website
  • display near real time highway, construction and other traffic information on the map by assessing your location;
  • assist your navigation and route planning;
  • send you our confirmation message to your email or phone;
  • send you push notifications and text and audio alerts of road incidents, closures, weather warnings and rest area information;
  • identify you and remember your preferences, such as your customized routes, favourite map layer and camera locations;
  • maintain and manage your My511 account profile;
  • provide you with a personalized experience on our Platforms;
Miscellaneous
  • analyze the use of Platforms, such as application traffic monitoring and statistics, (and not to be used to identify individuals);
  • provide customer or technical support;
  • conduct evaluation of the 511 program including the use of surveys or questionnaires by the Department of Highways and Public Works or partners;
  • other purposes permitted by Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act

Registration

We may ask visitors to register by filling in an online form. This is done so that the government can deliver our service and respond more effectively to a specific, identified individual. The Application will store data from the form and your responses to fulfil the service request. These communications become part of the record of the transaction and must comply with Government of Yukon records management procedures. We manage the personal information contained within these communications according to the requirements of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

Cookies and Trackers

Cookie is a data file that the web server uses to remember the behaviours and preferences of the user. We may use cookies, trackers, and other technologies on these Platforms to help personalize your experience. This allows these Platforms to better respond to the user’s habits on subsequent visits. If you have any concerns over the collection of this type of information you should set your browser to not accept cookies or adjust your phone settings to disable cookies. Setting these options will not exclude you from any Government of Yukon website.

Disclosure of Personal Information

We do not share, rent, sell or otherwise disclose personal information to any third party other than our service provider, except where you have consented. However, we may share your personal information if permitted by applicable law, court order, or enforceable regulatory requests or to detect or prevent fraud or security issues.

Location Services

By using our website or mobile application, you consent to the disclosure of personal information to these location service providers for the purpose of identifying your location and route planning. Location services are required to determine your starting point and ending point as well as for calculating routes so that we can provide you with tailored road condition information on our Platforms.

We use Google Map for the 511 Website and Android application, while the iOS application uses Apple Map. Our Platforms do not store any active route information. You may choose to disable location services by adjusting your device’s settings. Please refer to Google Map location policy and its privacy policy as well as Apple Maps & Privacy page and its privacy policy for further information on these services.

Analytics

We may use Google Analytics, New Relics, and other vendors (“Analyzers”) to help analyze the use of our website and mobile applications. These tools use cookies and tracking technologies to collect and generate information about your visit to these Platforms.

Analyzers may collect your device’s IP address, date and time of your visits, your device id, pages you have visited, how you interact with these webpages or applications, the website or application you arrived from, and other usage and device-related data from you which may include personal information.

By using and browsing through our Platforms, you consent to the disclosure of personal information to Analyzers for the purpose of improving our Service delivery, which includes evaluation of the 511 program, and the use of such information by Analyzers for their own purpose, such as creating user profiles and targeted advertising. You may want to review Google’s privacy policy and New Relics’ privacy notice before using our Platform.

Retention

In general, we (including our third-party service providers) retain the personal information that you provide for as long as necessary to fulfil the administration of Services. If you decide to delete your My511 account, Yukon 511 will no longer retain your information.

Notwithstanding the forgoing, retention and disposal of personal information is subject to Government of Yukon’s retention schedules under the authority of Archives Act.

Update or Correct Your Information

You may update your account profile at any time by logging into the mobile application or the website and entering the latest information. You may also contact the Government of Yukon directly to access, correct or update your personal information by submitting an access request under the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

Communicating with the Government of Yukon

If you choose to send an email or complete a feedback form online, your personal information may be used in order to respond to your inquiry.

We will not publish comments on Government of Yukon blog posts that contain information that identifies you or another person. This includes other personal information such as email addresses or telephone numbers.

Emails and other electronic methods used to communicate with the Government of Yukon are not secure unless this is specifically stated on a web page. We recommend you contact the government by phone or in person if you wish to communicate on a sensitive matter.

Information Security

We implement physical, technical, and administrative security measures to help safeguard your personal information. Please note that information transmitted online is not safe and can be prone to attacks and misuse. We cannot guarantee the security of your personal information if you choose to submit or transmit information electronically.

Third Party Sites

Please note that the Application may contain links to third party sites, applications and services (“Sites”). We are note responsible for privacy and security practices of these Sites and cannot guarantee the safety and security of personal information. Proceed at your own risk.

Social Media

The Government of Yukon’s use of social media serves as an extension of its presence on the internet. Social media accounts are public and are not hosted on Government of Yukon servers.

If you who choose to interact with the Government of Yukon through social media you should read the terms of service and privacy policies of these 3rd-party service providers and those of any applications used to access them.
